Online abuse is any type of abuse that happens on the internet where someone feels subjected to offensive material, harassment or bullying.
Some of the most common types of online abuse are:
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullies can use social media, text messages, apps, or online forums to send, post, or share negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. Cyberbullying can include: sending mean, threatening, or embarrassing texts or emails; posting embarrassing or hurtful photos or videos of someone online; spreading rumours about someone online; impersonating someone online to make them look bad; Excluding someone from online groups or activities.
Sexual or financial exploitation
Online financial exploitation is a type of fraud that takes place over the internet. Scammers use a variety of methods to deceive victims into giving them money or personal information, such as credit card numbers or bank account numbers. These come in many forms such as phishing scams, investment scams or romance scams:
Grooming
Online grooming is a process in which a relationship is built online with the intention of sexually abusing them. Groomers often start by pretending to be someone else, such as a peer or a celebrity. They may also target children who are feeling vulnerable or isolated.
Data suggests that around 40% of children and adults have experienced online bullying at some point in their lives. This can have a huge impact on their mental health and self-esteem which can damage their life in a number of ways.
It is important to spread awareness on the different types of online abuse so that users can identify these harms and stop them. Social media should be an inclusive environment for all to enjoy.
